Understanding Future’s Edge projects and missions
Future’s Edge members learn, earn, and build real-world experience by contributing to projects that solve meaningful problems for organisations, businesses, and communities.
This guide shows you the types of projects we take on, how they’re broken down into missions and tasks, and how you earn rewards for your contributions.
What types of projects does Future’s Edge deliver?
Section titled “What types of projects does Future’s Edge deliver?”Future’s Edge takes on collaborative projects that combine emerging technology, human-centered design, and social impact. These projects create value for our partners while giving you the opportunity to build your skills, strengthen your portfolio, and earn financial rewards.
Project categories
Section titled “Project categories”AI-integrated web applications
Section titled “AI-integrated web applications”We build interactive web-based tools that help organisations work more efficiently and engage their communities more effectively. Recent examples include mission matchmakers for volunteering, youth ideas studios for participatory decision-making, and AI peer coaches for wellbeing and strengths discovery 1 2.
Digital transformation consulting
Section titled “Digital transformation consulting”We help organisations adopt emerging technologies, redesign their processes, and engage their communities in new ways. This includes strategy development, user research, service design, and change management 3.
Community platforms and engagement tools
Section titled “Community platforms and engagement tools”We design and build platforms that bring people together, enable collaboration, and amplify youth voices. These include governance portals, knowledge repositories, and collaborative storytelling environments 1 2.
Training and capacity building
Section titled “Training and capacity building”We deliver workshops and training programs on topics like blockchain, AI, design thinking, digital skills, and decentralised governance—both for our members and for partner organisations 3.

Discrete tasks within this mission

Task deep dive: Conduct user interviews
Section titled “Task deep dive: Conduct user interviews”Let’s examine a single task in complete detail to understand eligibility, proof requirements, and the reward structure.
Task specification
Section titled “Task specification”Task name: Conduct user interviews (15–20 sessions)
Task description: Conduct semi-structured interviews with young people aged 16–24 who have engaged with Youthful Minds’ programs. Use the approved interview protocol to explore how they currently share ideas, barriers they face, and what would motivate greater participation. Each interview should last 30–45 minutes and be recorded (with consent) for later transcription 2.
Task value: $1,200 total ($60–80 per completed interview)
Estimated time: 10–12 hours (including preparation, interviews, and documentation)
Task type: Collaborative (multiple members can claim portions of this task)
Delivery deadline: 2 weeks from task claim date
Eligibility requirements
Section titled “Eligibility requirements”To claim this task, you must meet the following criteria:
Minimum trust score: 150 points
Members with a positive trust score and demonstrated reliability can conduct research that involves direct contact with vulnerable populations 2 4.
Required skill proofs:
- “Active listener” badge (earned through foundational communication missions), OR* “Empathy practitioner” badge (earned through human-centered design missions), OR* Demonstrated experience in qualitative research (verified through portfolio or prior mission completion)
Preferred additional skills:
- Experience working with young people* Understanding of trauma-informed practice* Familiarity with qualitative research methods
Compliance requirements:
- Complete Future’s Edge research ethics module (1 hour online course)* Hold current Working with Children Check (or equivalent for your region)* Sign research confidentiality agreement
Required proof of completion
Section titled “Required proof of completion”To receive payment and incentive points for this task, you must submit the following evidence:
- Completed interview recordings (audio or video, with participant consent)
- Interview field notes document (observations, context, non-verbal cues)
- Participant consent forms (signed or digitally confirmed)
- Interview completion log (dates, duration, participant IDs, any issues encountered)
- Reflection memo (250–500 words on key insights, patterns observed, and recommendations for analysis)
All materials are uploaded to the project workspace within 48 hours of completing your final interview.
Peer review process
Section titled “Peer review process”Your submission will be reviewed by:
- Mission lead (verifies completeness and compliance with protocol)
- One peer team member (assesses quality and provides feedback)
- Youthful Minds project liaison (confirms interviews met partner expectations)
Reviews typically complete within 5 business days. If revisions are needed, you’ll have 3 days to address feedback.
Rewards and incentives
Section titled “Rewards and incentives”Upon successful completion and approval, you receive:
Financial reward: $1,200 (if you completed all 15–20 interviews) or proportional payment based on completed interviews
Payment is processed via smart contract within 48 hours of final approval and distributed to your nominated account 3 4.
Trust score points: +45 points
Reflects your reliability, quality of work, and ethical conduct during the research process 2 4.
Skill proof progress: +30 points toward “Empathy practitioner” badge
This task contributes to the 100-point threshold required to earn this verified credential 2 4.
Impact score points: +25 points
Recognises your contribution to creating positive change for young people through Youthful Minds’ work 2 4.
Portfolio asset: Verified mission completion
A permanent record appears on your Future’s Edge profile showing your contribution to this project, viewable by potential employers and university admissions teams 2 4.

Step 1: Discover available tasks
Section titled “Step 1: Discover available tasks”You log into the Future’s Edge platform and navigate to Mission Control 2 5. Your personalised dashboard shows:
- Missions matching your skills and interests (based on your profile and prior completions)* Missions currently seeking members* Missions with upcoming deadlines* Recommended missions based on your trust score and skill proof goals
You see the Youth Ideas Studio project prominently featured because:
- Your profile indicates interest in UX research and social impact* You recently completed the “Active listener” foundational mission* You have a trust score of 180 (above the 150 minimum for this project)
Step 2: Explore the mission
Section titled “Step 2: Explore the mission”You click into the “Youth needs ethnography study” mission and see:
- Mission overview and goals* Full list of tasks with value pools and time estimates* Current team members (3 people have already joined)* Mission timeline and key milestones* Required eligibility criteria
You’re drawn to the “Conduct user interviews” task because:
- The $1,200 value pool is substantial* You have relevant experience from a university research project* The timeline fits your availability over the next 2 weeks* You can work toward your “Empathy practitioner” badge
Step 3: Check eligibility and claim the task
Section titled “Step 3: Check eligibility and claim the task”You click “Claim task” and the platform runs an automatic eligibility check:
✓ Trust score: 180 (requirement: 150+)
✓ Required skill proof: “Active listener” badge earned
⚠ Compliance: Research ethics module not yet completed
⚠ Compliance: Working with Children Check not uploaded
The platform prompts you to:
- Complete the 1-hour research ethics module (available immediately)
- Upload your Working with Children Check documentation
You complete the ethics module (earning +5 trust score points as a bonus) and upload your clearance certificate. The platform confirms your eligibility and reserves 12 interview slots for you from the available pool.
Step 4: Connect with your team
Section titled “Step 4: Connect with your team”You’re automatically added to the mission team workspace where you:
- Introduce yourself to the mission lead and other members* Attend a 30-minute virtual kickoff meeting (recorded for later viewing)* Receive the approved interview protocol and consent materials* Get access to the participant scheduling system* Connect with the team member handling recruitment to coordinate scheduling
Step 5: Complete your work
Section titled “Step 5: Complete your work”Over the next 10 days, you:
- Conduct 15 interviews with young people (45 minutes each, including setup and notes)
- Upload recordings and field notes after each session
- Communicate with team members about emerging themes
- Submit your final interview completion log and reflection memo
As you complete interviews, your progress tracker updates in real-time, showing:
- Interviews completed: 15/15
- Documentation uploaded: 100%
- Quality check: Pending peer review
Step 6: Peer review and approval
Section titled “Step 6: Peer review and approval”Your submission enters the review queue:
Day 1–2: Mission lead reviews completeness
- Confirms all 15 consent forms present
- Verifies recordings are audible and complete
- Checks field notes follow protocol
- Provides minor feedback: “Excellent work. Your reflection memo surfaced important insights about barriers to participation. Please clarify observation in interview 7 field notes.”
You quickly update the field notes as requested.
Day 3: Peer team member reviews quality
- Listens to sample of 3 interviews to assess technique
- Reviews your reflection memo
- Rates quality: 4.5/5 stars
- Comment: “Really thoughtful questions that helped participants open up. Good use of follow-up probes.”
Day 4: Youthful Minds liaison confirms satisfaction
- Approves work as meeting partner expectations
- Adds gratitude note: “These interviews will be invaluable for our strategic planning. Thank you for treating our young people with such respect.”
Day 5: Final approval and reward processing
All three reviews complete with approval. The platform triggers the reward distribution process.
Step 7: Receive rewards
Section titled “Step 7: Receive rewards”Within 48 hours of final approval, you receive:

Step 8: Leverage your accomplishment
Section titled “Step 8: Leverage your accomplishment”In the weeks following, you:
Build on your skills:
- Claim the “Transcribe and code interview data” task in the same mission, working with the raw interview recordings you conducted
- This earns you the final 5 points needed to unlock your “Empathy practitioner” skill proof badge
- The badge appears on your profile with blockchain verification, which you share on LinkedIn
Expand your network:
- Connect with two team members who share your interest in youth mental health
- Join a Field Office with several active UX researchers
- Get invited to collaborate on a future research project with another NFP partner
Advance your career:
- Include the verified mission completion in your university portfolio for your Human Services degree
- Reference the experience in a job interview for a youth worker position
- Use the Youthful Minds liaison’s gratitude note as a professional reference
Contribute to the knowledge commons:

Understanding mission types and progression
Section titled “Understanding mission types and progression”Future’s Edge offers four types of missions, each designed to build different capabilities and serve different purposes in your learning journey 2 4.
Standard missions
Section titled “Standard missions”Foundational experiences that every member should complete to build a broad skill base and confidence in emerging technology, social impact, and leadership. These missions require no special prerequisites and help you discover your strengths 2.
Examples:
- Share knowledge by creating content for the KnowledgeBank
- Onboard a new recruit to Future’s Edge
- Complete digital skills fundamentals training
- Participate in a governance proposal discussion
Typical rewards: Lower financial value ($50–$300), moderate trust score points, foundational skill proof progress
Impact missions
Section titled “Impact missions”Designed to create value for local and global communities while building a range of applied skills. These missions involve real-world partners and produce tangible outcomes 2 3.
Examples:
- Digital transformation projects for local businesses or NFPs (like the Youth Ideas Studio)
- Volunteering with social enterprises and charities
- Providing technology access and digital skills training for underserved communities
Typical rewards: Moderate to high financial value ($300–$2,000), high impact score points, portfolio-worthy accomplishments
Specialized missions
Section titled “Specialized missions”Tailored to your specific strengths, interests, and career aspirations. These missions allow you to deepen expertise in particular domains once you’ve built foundational skills 2.
Examples:
- Advanced AI/ML development for specific use cases
- Strategic consulting on governance or business models
- Complex UX research with specialized populations
- Technical writing or documentation for open-source projects
Typical rewards: High financial value ($1,000–$5,000), specialized skill proof progress, professional portfolio pieces
Advanced missions
Section titled “Advanced missions”Unlocked only after you’ve achieved higher trust scores and demonstrated mastery. These missions involve complex challenges, significant responsibility, and leadership opportunities 2 4.
Examples:
- Lead a full project delivery team for a major client
- Design and facilitate a multi-week training program
- Serve on a strategic council advising Future’s Edge governance
- Create new frameworks or methodologies for the organisation
Typical rewards: Very high financial value ($3,000–$10,000+), leadership gratitude points, governance privileges, emeritus recognition
How project revenue flows to members
Section titled “How project revenue flows to members”Understanding how money flows from client projects to member rewards helps you see the ethical foundation of Future’s Edge economics 3 4.
Revenue distribution model
Section titled “Revenue distribution model”When Future’s Edge completes a project like the Youth Ideas Studio:
Total project value: $45,000 (what Youthful Minds pays)
Distribution:
- 70% to member earning pool: $31,500 distributed to contributing members via smart contracts based on completed tasks 3 4
- 20% to Future’s Edge treasury: $9,000 to sustain operations, platform development, and community programs 3 4
- 10% to Field Office fund: $4,500 allocated to supporting Field Office activities and community building 3 4
Task-based payment calculation
Section titled “Task-based payment calculation”Each task within a mission has a predetermined value pool based on:
- Estimated time and effort required
- Specialization and skill level needed
- Impact and importance to project success
- Market rates for similar professional work
Payments are processed automatically via smart contracts when you submit proof of completion and receive peer approval 3 4.
Ongoing royalty model
Section titled “Ongoing royalty model”For certain types of contributions—particularly software development, frameworks, and reusable content—you may receive ongoing royalties if your work generates future value 3 4.
Example:
If you build the “AI idea clustering engine” for the Youth Ideas Studio and Future’s Edge later licenses this component to three other clients:
- You receive 40% of the licensing fee for each subsequent use
- Payments continue as long as the component generates revenue
- You maintain eligibility as long as you have a positive trust score
This royalty model rewards innovation and ensures long-term value recognition.
Building your Future’s Edge career path

- 1000+ trust score: Vote on organisational governance, eligible for council seats
